Why We Use Tallow in Our Soaps (And Why Your Skin Will Thank You)
At Boston Soap Co., we’re proud to bring you real soap made with real ingredients—grown, raised, and rendered right here in Massachusetts. One of the most powerful and misunderstood ingredients we use is tallow.
What Is Tallow?
Tallow is rendered beef fat—a traditional ingredient in soapmaking that’s been used for centuries. Rich in fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and highly compatible with our skin's natural sebum, tallow makes an incredibly nourishing and gentle bar of soap.
Why We Choose Tallow Over Trendy Alternatives
While many commercial soaps rely on palm oil or synthetic detergents, we use Massachusetts-grown tallow because it:
-
Moisturizes deeply without clogging pores
-
Creates a hard, long-lasting bar with a creamy lather
-
Supports local farms and reduces waste
-
Aligns with ancestral skincare traditions
-
Is biodegradable and non-toxic
We work with local farms to source suet and fat that would otherwise be discarded—turning what was once waste into a sustainable skincare solution.
How We Use Tallow in Our Soaps
We render the fat ourselves in small batches and blend it with other simple, whole ingredients like , coconut oil, castor oil, and essential oils. Our signature blends—like Lavender Lemongrass and Honey Milkies with tallow goat milk lard and honey—use tallow as a key base for their skin-loving benefits.
The Result?
A bar of soap that’s nourishing, long-lasting, and rooted in Massachusetts agriculture.
